I'm gonna be honest with you. It's highly probably, about 99 percent certain, that I will be taking some form of narcotic following my hip replacement surgery. With this said, narcotics have been known to cause constipation, making it difficult to poop. The last thing I want to do after having a hip replaced is to strain to much (so I've been told) for fear that I could potentially dislocate my hip.
I do not want that!
Instead of relying on laxatives for the beginning part of my recovery, I began searching the internet for natural remedies. What first popped up are your usual high fiber fruits like apples, pears and prunes. Coffee or black teas are always on the list to get things moving as well, but I also found these recipes which I plan to test.
CHIA SEED LEMON WATER
Supposedly this drink is a TikTok sensation, being called the "Internal Shower". Its a mixture of water, chia seeds, lemon, option to add salt and/or cayenne pepper.
Chia seeds have a high amount of fiber. When adding lemon juice, you get your vitamin C, salt acts as an electrolyte, and cayenne pepper will jump-start your system. Just be careful to not add too much fiber all at once. You wouldn't want the opposite effect happening.
CHOCOLATE AVOCADO SMOOTHIE
You might be turning your noses up for this one but don't knock it until you try it. Chocolate and avocados go together like peanut butter and jelly. Trust me! Avocados are high in fiber, especially insoluble fiber, which helps move waste through your body. Cocoa powder not only contains fiber, but magnesium as well, which can help relax muscles, including the digestive track. This recipe does have a lot of calories, but nutrient dense calories. Give it a try. I promise you will not be disappointed.
THE POOP SOUP
Soups are packed with nutrients and easy to digest. They also have high water content, which can soften your dry and hard stools, allowing them to pass through your intestinal tract easily. This soup is super easy and tasty. Made with green lentils, mushrooms and broccoli. I added swish chard for some extra fiber. That's the great thing about soups! You can literally add any vegetable to the pot (no pun intended).
Whether or not you are having a hip replacement, we all get blocked up from time to time, so keep these recipes handy for those times.
Happy Pooping!
